Bengaluru Surya Kiran Jets Crash
This mishap occurred on 19th February a day before The Aero India 2019. Two aircrafts of the Surya Kiran Aerobatics Team hit each other mid-air on Tuesday at Bengaluru’s Yelahanka Air Force Station. At approximately 11.50 am, the pilots, who were engaged in a routine practice session, had to eject immediately after two aircrafts struck each other. One pilot has lost his life in this unfortunate incident, as per official sources.
Wing Commander Sahil Gandhi has been identified as the deceased, he was known as Surya Kiran 7. The other two pilots, Squadron Leader Tejeshwar Singh and team 2IC Wing Commander Vijay Shelke have been wounded and were airlifted to Command Hospital in Bengaluru.
Damage to life and property in the surrounding area of crash site is being looked into. A Court of Inquiry will scrutinize the reason/s for this mishap.
According to HAL, which is coordinating The Aero India 2019, the squadron was from the Bidar Air Force Station and was practicing for the closing event on Wednesday when the wing of one of the aircrafts apparently struck the other,” the IAF said in a statement.
According to official accounts, there were 3 pilots in the two aircrafts that crashed. Eyewitnesses have, however, confirmed that they witnessed 2 parachutes eject and one of them has captured the same in a mobile video. Although there were preliminary rumours that one civilian was also wounded, a representative with the Ministry of Defence said that there were no civilian fatalities.
